What the heck is a snood?
A snood is a traditional hairnet or hood-like headgear designed to hold and protect long hair at the back of the head.
The word comes from the Old English word snod, meaning a ribbon or band for the hair, recorded as early as 725 CE.
For dogs, a snood is a tube-like fabric hood that slips over a dog’s head and neck to hold back long ears and fur. It is meant to protect the dogs ears from the elements, and/or reduce anxiety.
Mealtime Hygiene
Long-eared breeds like Cocker Spaniels, Basset Hounds and Afghan Hounds wear snoods to keep their ears out of food and water bowls. This stops fur from getting wet, stained, or matted with food.
Weather and Outdoor Protection
Snoods shield a dog's ears and neck from cold wind, snow, and rain during winter walks.
They prevent long ear feathering from dragging in mud or catching on thorns and brush.
Anxiety and Noise Relief
The gentle, snug pressure of a snood acts like a wrap to calm nervous dogs.
It can help muffle loud noises during thunderstorms, fireworks, or grooming blow-dryers
